Most kitchens have at least one lighting situation that bugs the homeowner - fixtures that don't quite match, or a switch that only does on and off. That was the case here in Almaden Valley. The homeowner had three pendant lights over the island and wanted new fixtures plus the ability to dim them. Simple enough on paper, but the details matter a lot with a job like this.

We pulled the three existing pendants and mounted the new glass fixtures onto the existing ceiling boxes. Before anything got hung permanently, we checked that each box was secure and properly rated for the weight of the new pendants. Skipping that step is how you end up with a fixture that sags or, worse, comes down entirely.

Here's where a lot of DIY installs go sideways - getting all three pendants to hang at exactly the same height. We measured each one individually so they line up perfectly, centered and evenly spaced over the island. When you're standing in the kitchen, that uniform hang line is what makes the whole thing look intentional and finished rather than thrown together.

We also swapped out the standard Decora switch for a dimmer that's actually compatible with the new LED fixtures. This part is important. Not every dimmer works with every LED bulb, and a mismatch gives you flicker, buzzing, or a dimming range that cuts out early. We tested the full range after install - smooth from full brightness all the way down to a soft, easy glow with zero issues.

The result is three clean pendants hanging at uniform height over the island, and a dimmer that actually works the way it should. Whether it's a fixture swap, a dimmer upgrade, or a full kitchen lighting overhaul, getting the details right - height, mounting, and compatibility - is what separates a polished result from one that just kind of works.
