There are several different battery backup systems that allow your home to function even when the utility power company does not. Besides being able to light up your home when the grid is off, you can also utilize the battery power system to save money on your utility bill. This is done with a method called peak shaving: by charging your batteries when the electricity rates are the lowest and discharging when they are the highest. With the basic principle of the battery storage system in mind, we can compare and contrast different battery backup products. There are some things to consider when choosing the battery that is right for you.
The Tesla Powerwall 2 happens to be the most popular of all home batteries. It’s AC coupled, which means the inverter is built inside the unit and interfaces directly with your AC Breaker box. It has a continuous load rating of 7.6kW and a Surge or Peak load of 9 kW. The constant load is the power you can use continuously until the Battery drains, and the Peak load is a load you consider for starting motors, such as a good pump or AC unit. These units are stackable, meaning you can add as many as you want to your system, weighing about 250 lbs. The height is about 45 inches, the width is 30 inches, and the thickness is 6 inches. It has a storage capacity of 13.5kWh, meaning one unit can power a home for about 12 hours. Tesla offers a 10-year warranty with this system, and it costs anywhere from $10,000 to $13,000 with installation.
Motor to reduce the inrush current by 50-70%. Its storage capacity is 13.6 kWh, and it has a 12-year warranty. It has an excellent design with an intelligent circuit control, which eliminates the need for a critical load panel (though this could also be eliminated with a Span Panel.) Like Tesla, they have an excellent app, and this particular Battery supports a generator system so that the generator can charge the Battery. The Battery is made of lithium iron phosphate, and this specific chemistry is thought to be more efficient but often lacks the surge necessary to start bigger motor appliances. The Battery is about 45 inches by 29 inches with a thickness of 11 inches.
he Franklin System has a continuous load of 5kWh and a peak of 10kWh making it more ideal for starting your motors, though you can always put a soft start on an AC motor to reduce the inrush current by 50-70%. Its storage capacity is 13.6 kWh and it has a 12-year warranty. It has a nice design with a smart circuit control, which eliminates the need for a critical load panel (though this could be eliminated with a Span Panel as well.) Like Tesla, they have a nice app and this particular Battery supports a generator system, so the generator can charge the battery. The battery is made of lithium iron phosphate, this particular chemistry is thought to be more efficient but often lacks the surge necessary to start bigger motor appliances. The battery is about 45 inches by 29 inches with a thickness of 11 inches.
Sonnen is a German-based company that has distribution throughout the United States. They have two different products, one with a max capacity of 20kWh and the other 30kWh. The continuous load is 4.8 kW, and the peak is 8.6 kW, which is not ideal for larger motors. The Sonnencore battery comes with a ten-year warranty, and the EcoLinx comes with a 15-year warranty/15,000 cycles. These batteries tend to be much bigger, standing close to 70 inches tall and 27 inches wide.
The Generac Powercell is a perfect option for those who live off the grid or want more storage capacity and peak power. This power cell has a continuous load of 9kWh and peaks at 12kW, making it ideal for starting larger motors. The ability of this product starts at 9kWh but can get up to 18kWh per battery by adding battery cells. The unit does not look as nice and has an inverter separate from the battery unit. The Generac system has different battery chemistry from your typical backup battery, which allows it to get those high peak loads. It’s a Nickel Manganese Cobalt battery, which is common in most electric cars because it offers higher energy density and surges power. The power cell has both an AC and DC coupled option. The battery cabinet size is 22” by 10” by 68”.
Enphase is a DC-coupled system that intelligently interacts with your solar system. The continuous load of their battery is 3.84 kWh and peak is 5.7 kWh. Its starting storage capacity is 10kWh. The battery is designed very nicely and it’s very compact.
